SCSU Women's Lacrosse's Historic Season Ends With 12-9 Loss To Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost a tight matchup against Assumption, 12-9, to decide the final sport in the upcoming Northeast 10 Conference Championship tournament. With the loss, Southern's season ends with an overall record of 9-8 for the year and 4-8 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 9-7 overall and 6-6 in conference play while securing the eighth seed in the conference tournament. Southern's nine wins this season are the most in program history.

On the Owls' first goal of the game, Bayleigh Takacs' assist broke the SCSU program single-season points record. She finished the game against Assumption with two goals and five assists for 78 points for the season. The record is the fifth program record that Takacs broke this season, which includes the single-game, single-season and career assist marks as well as the single-game point record.

In addition to Takacs' seven-point performance, Kirsten McIntire scored three times to lead the Owls and finishes the year with 33 goals and three assists for 36 points. Karlie Rowe added a goal and assist to give her 38 goals and 15 assists for 53 points for the season. Freshman goalkeeper Caelan Connors also stopped 12 shots-on-goal and a major reason the Owls played Assumption as close as they did.

The game itself was a back-and-forth battle that saw Southern Connecticut and Assumption trade goals for most of the afternoon. Assumption scored the game's first three goals in the first 3:06 of play, which matched its largest lead of the game. Southern responded with four-straight goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 4-3 lead with 12:12 remaining in the second quarter. The two teams played back-and-forth as the game heading to halftime tied, 6-6.

Assumption used a 2-to-1 advantage in the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead into the fourth. After McIntire tied the game with her third goal of the afternoon less than a minute into the final quarter, Assumption countered with three-straight goals over an eight-minute stretch that saw the Greyhounds jump out to an 11-8 lead in the closing minutes. McIntire scored again, but Assumption added on late to push its lead back to three goals.

Takacs finishes an incredible career that produced 106 goals and 78 assists for 184 career points, which is good for third all-time. Her 106 goals rank fourth all-time while her 78 assists this year are the most in program history. Takac's 41 goals this season are tied for the 10th most in a single season in program history. Rowe finishes her career with 131 goals and 36 assists for 167 points, which is fourth all-time. Her 131 goals rank third in program history are fifth all-time.

Brianna Shaw also completed the year with 91 draw controls for the fourth most in program history and 34 caused turnovers. Shaw sits first and second in that category after breaking the program record with 36 last season. Her 134 career draw controls are also the sixth most in program history while her 75 caused turnovers rank second all-time. For Caelan Connors, her 184 saves are the second-most in a single season in program history.
