SCSU Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball completed its four-game sweep of Le Moyne with a win in both games its second doubleheader against the Dolphins in as many days. Southern won the first game, 12-7 and then rallied to win the second game, 5-1. The Owls series sweep moves them to 21-7 overall while they open their Northeast 10 Conference schedule at 4-0 while Le Moyne dropped to 15-15 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

SCSU Baseball Highlights vs. Le Moyne (Apr. 8, 2023)

Owls leadoff hitting Billy Sullivan was 4-for-9 with two RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader. Sullivan was 9-for-17 with four RBI for the series. Andrew Eng connected for his 10th home run of the season while also scoring four runs. Connor Goggin also homered and drove in four runs for the day.

In the first game, Matt Smith picked up the win after tossing 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief while giving up three hits and striking out three. In the second game, Tommy Benincaso improved to 4-0 on the season after giving up one run on five hits over six innings before Tommy Hughes pitched a perfect seventh inning for his sixth save of the season.

In the first game, the Owls first run of the game came after four walks in the inning. The Owls struck for four runs in the third. Sullivan singled to lead off the inning before scoring on a double by Colin Mason. After Eng walked, Goggin blasted his fifth home run of the season to give Southern a 5-0 lead. Le Moyne chipped away and tied the game in the fourth inning.

Southern got the lead back in the top of the fifth inning when a fielding error, a hit batter and back-to-backs forced a run in. Jack Drewry then drove in Eng to give the Owls a 7-5 lead.

Le Moyne was quick to get back into the game when they scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up. In the top of the ninth, Zach Healy led off with a single before Derrick Jagello bunted him over. After Mike Ferrett reached on an error to move Healy to third, Chad Fedeli dropped down a bunt to score Healy, while also reaching on an error. Bedryczuk reached on a dropped fly ball, which allowed pinch runner Jake Gruttadauria to score. Sullivan then singled home Fedeli to give Southern a 10-7 lead. Mason then drove in Bedryczuk before Sullivan scored on a wild pitch to give Southern a 12-7 lead.

In the second game, Southern broke up a 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth when Eng doubled to lead off the inning before scoring on a single by Goggin. Drewry then drove in Goggin to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

After Le Moyne got a run back in the bottom of the inning, Southern scored two more in its next at-bat. Bedryczuk singled and then stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch after Sullivan lined out to third. Following a ground out to third by Mason, Eng sent a no-doubter deep over the right field walk to plate Bedryczuk and give Southern a 5-1 lead. In the seventh, Bedryczuk walked before Sullivan drove him in with a single. After Le Moyne put two runners on base to start the bottom of the seventh, Hughes entered the game to induce a double play ball before getting the final battled to ground back to the mound to end the game.

Southern is back in action when it takes on University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn. in a four-game series on Apr. 14-16.
