SCSU Baseball Drops Final Doubleheader of the Season To Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Adelphi closed out the regular season by sweeping a Northeast 10 doubleheader from Southern Connecticut. The Panthers rallied for two runs for the walk-off 2-1 win in the opener before winning the nightcap, 4-1, to complete the four game-series sweep at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Adelphi improved to 22-24 overall and 9-11 in the NE10 while the Owls dropped to 29-15 overall and 12-8 in conference play.

In the opener, Mike Ferrett's RBI double down the right field line in the top of the first scored Billy Sullivan, who led off with a single, to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The Owls had just three hits, a double by Ferrett and singles by Sullivan and Jack Drewry in the opener. Matt Smith (1-3) went the distance for the Owls and allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while walking four and fanning three in taking the loss.


The Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh with Michael Draskin's RBI single giving Adelphi the walkoff win.

In game two, the Panthers scored one in the second and added two more in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.


Southern Connecticut got on the board in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Chad Fedeli that scored Ferrett, who led off the inning with a single.

Adelphi added an insurance run in the eighth to extend its lead to 4-1 to close the scoring.

Tommy Benincaso (6-1) went 7 â…“ innings and scattered six hits while allowing four earned runs, walking one and striking out three and suffered his first loss of the season.

Sullivan, Ferrett and Izaiah Walker each had two hits for the Owls in the nightcap.
 
Southern awaits the outcome of tomorrow's matchup between New Haven and Saint Rose before the final conference seedings are announced, but have clinched the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Division and will host a Northeast 10 Conference Championship First Round game on Tuesday, May 9 at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
