Southern Connecticut State University volleyball won its 2023 season opener against Kutztown as they swept the Golden Bears, 3-0. The Owls then took Bridgeport to five sets before SCSU dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2, to the Purple Knights. Southern opens the year at 1-1.
Sara Enright led the Owls with 21 kills and seven aces while also totaling 19 digs in the two games. Against Bridgeport, the second-year Owl tallied 12 kills and 11 digs with four service aces.
Kacey Deecher totaled 18 kills, 12 digs and six aces, including eight kills and four aces while hitting .263 in the match. In the second game, Deecher had 10 kills and eight digs. Taylor Jones paced the Owls with 43 assists in two games, including 30 against Bridgeport.
First-year Owl Carissa Michel got off to a slow start in the first match, with three kills, three digs and a block, but hit a team-high .421 in the second game while totaling 10 kills for the Owls.
Southern is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 3 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to face Southern New Hampshire at 11 a.m. followed by a 1:30 p.m. tilt against Edinboro.
