Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SCSU Men's Soccer Falls At Queens, 2-1

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer took a 2-1 loss at Queens in a non-conference matchup in Flushing, N.Y. The Owls dropped to 1-2-1 overall while Queens improved to 2-1-1 on the year.

Queens scored the game's first goal when the Knights' Hary Cooke took control of the ball at the top of the box and was able to settle the ball between a pair of Owls defenders. Cooke potted the game's first goal with a shot to the lower left corner to give Queens an early 1-0, just under 10 minutes into play.

"Congrats to Queens on the night for picking up the three points," Owls head coach Kevin Anderson said. "They are a very difficult team to break down and are able to unbalance you in the attack. Even so, I thought that we controlled good parts of the game and created enough through the run of play along with attacking restarts to get more from this game."

In the 50th minute of play, the Owls continue to pressure the Queens backfield and held an 11-8 advantage on shots late in the game. After Jacob Rose broke up an attempted clearing pass by Queens and handed it to Ozar Razo, the latter's shot on goal was easily steered away. Attempted to move the ball out of their defensive zone, Queens was perplexed by a big-time play by Umberto Catale, who picked off a pass, dribbled between a pair of defenders and then blasted a shot off the far-side post that rang home to tie the game at 1-1.

It was Cooke again with just under 15 minutes to play to give Queens a 2-1 lead. The Knights played the ball from midfield deep into the Owls defensive zone. After Southern picked up the ball outside the box, Cooke was able to take control of a bouncing ball at the 18, walked around a defender and then slipped a shot past Owls keeper Devin Juan as the home town team took the one-goal lead, 2-1.

"Quality in key moments was missing for us tonight," Anderson explained. "On the defensive side of things, I thought we did ok but need to be more assertive and defend in a more imposing way especially on the top of our box. We will rest up, review and then get ready to go again this weekend as we open up conference play."

Southern is back in action when it hosts Saint Rose for its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
