SCSU Football Falls To No. 23 Assumption, 42-29

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football lost to No. 23 Assumption, 42-29, in the Owls' home opener at Jess Dow Field. The loss dropped the Owls to 0-2 on the year while Assumption improved to 2-0.



Freshman running back Kieran Falzon scored twice for the Owls, posting a 36-yard touchdown reception before running for a seven-yard score late in the game. Falzon finished with 11 carries for 74 yards as well as two catches for 42 yards. Shawn Martin continued to lead the Owls backfield. A week after scoring twice at Shepherd, Martin posted eight carries for 73 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown run. He also returned one kickoff for 19 yards. Luke Gadson also scored his first touchdown as an Owl on a four-yard catch in the back of the endzone following Falzon's 56-yard run.

Tylon Papallo had nine catches for 112 yards as he was one of eight different receivers to catch a pass from Keith Ridley. Papallo also returned three punts for 31 yards. Ridley finished the day 23-for-31 for 266 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. On defense, Joe DiGello had nine tackles while Hasan Dominick, Jr. and Jahlil Watson finished with seven.

Assumption jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with 9:48 remaining in the first quarter. On the Owls final possession of the quarter, Ridley handed the ball off to Falzon on the first play that ended 58 yards away on the Greyhounds' four-yard line. Ridley then found Gadson in the back of the end zone to put the Owls on the board. After Southern stopped Assumption, and Papallo's 14-yard punt return put the Owls on their own 18 yard line, Ridley hooked up with Ryan Soules on a 36 yard pass to move into Assumption territory. After switching sides to start the second quarter, Ridley connected with Falzon on a 36-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. Assumption scored with 3:09 left in the half to take a 21-14 lead.

Coming out of the break, Assumption scored again on its first possession to take a 28-14 lead. Ridley was picked off on the ensuing possession before the Owls' defense held Assumption to an four-and-out. On the Owls' next possession, and facing a 2nd-and-18 after a holding call on a Southern lineman, Martin took a handoff from Ridley and plowed through a pile at the line to break free for a 59-yard touchdown run. Ridley found Soules for the two-point conversion to cut into Assumption's lead, 28-22.

Assumption scored on its next two possessions to take a 42-22 lead with 10:02 left in the game. After trading possessions, Ridley found Papallo for gains of 15 and 21, as well as Soules for six and Gadson for 11 to move down to the Assumption seven-yard line. Falzon then took the handoff and swept to the right for his second of the day.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when it opens Northeast-10 Conference play at University of New Haven at 1 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.
