SCSU Men's Basketball Stun New Haven In 78-74 Overtime Victory

Box Score The Owls pick up a huge overtime victory against their cross town rivals, University of New Haven Chargers, 78-74. This road win brings the Owls record to 11-3 on the year with a conference record of 5-3.

The Owls headed to West Haven looking to avenge their 2023 NE10 tournament elimination against the Chargers this time with the help from St. Rose transfer Josh McGettigan. The Owls took a first half lead 36-27 which could be attributed to their 46% shooting percentage from behind the arch.

Headed into the second half the Owls were able to extend their lead to as much as 11 points but the Chargers would not go out without a fight and would go on a 11-2 run, eventually gaining the lead with seven minutes left in the game. The remainder of the second half would be a back and forth battle going down to the wire.

Josh McGettigan was able to put together a monster 27 point performance for the Owls with multiple late game baskets. McGettigan would hit a three with just 50 seconds left to put the Owls within one of the Chargers. Then with just four seconds it would be McGettigan answering the bell once again, draining a three point buzzer beater off an assist from Marty Silvera to send the game to overtime. Forward Kazell Stewart also came up huge for the Owls with multiple late game blocks and shot contests. Stewart put up a career high seven blocks along with 15 points in the overtime win.

In the overtime period the Owls relied on good defense and free throw shooting to seal the 78-74 victory, bouncing back from their 78-69 loss against Saint Michael's last week.

The Owls next matchup will be on the road against Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3:30 PM in Manchester, N.H.
