SCSU Baseball Picked Second In 2024 NE10 Preseason Coaches Poll

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut baseball was picked second in the Southwest Division in the 2024 Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced by the NE10 on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024. The Owls received three first-place votes.

Pace was picked to win the division, with seven first-place votes, followed by the Owls. New Haven, with two first-place votes, was picked third followed by Adelphi, American International and Saint Rose.
The Owls finished the 2023 season 29-16 and 12-8 in the NE10SW, which was good for the No. 2 seed in the NE10 tournament. Southern lost in the first round of the NE10 tournament to Pace, 6-4, at The Ballpark at SCSU.

The Owls bring back three-time All-NE10 pick Billy Sullivan, who was also a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American. Sullivan finished the 2023 season with team-highs in average (.379), hits (67) and runs scored (51), as well as 17 stolen bases. The fourth-year Owl also totaled 10 doubles, two home runs and 31 RBI while posting a .480 slugging and .448 on-base for a .928 OPS. Sullivan's 67 hits rank second in the NE10 while his 1.55 hits per game lead the conference. He also ranked fourth in the NE10 in runs and ranked in the top 10 in stolen bases. For his career, Sullivan has a .352 (141-400) average with 22 doubles, 69 RBI and 121 runs scored as well as 35 stolen bases.

Jack Drewry, Derrick Jagello and Chad Fedeli return to the Owls lineup. Drewry batted .286 (36-126) with a home run, 21 RBI and 18 runs scored. Jagello hit .240 (36-150) with a home run, 24 RBI and 25 runs scored as well as 28 walks for a .373 on-base percentage. Fedeli hit .228 (33-145) with 21 RBI and 29 runs scored.

On the mound, Mike Szturma led the Owls with a 4.32 ERA while posting a 2-3 record with 49 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched. Steve Phillips was 4-4 for the year over 52 2/3 innings while the bullpen will also return Tyshaun Diaz, Brett Fee and Spencer Fox.

Newcomers to the Owls lineup include Mike Talavera, who was a two-time NJCAA All-Region pick at Hudson Valley Community College. Talavera batted over .400 in each of his two years while totaling 60 stolen bases. Keegan Daigle was 7-2 with 62 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched at UConn Avery Point while Jagger Duquette, a transfer from NCAA Division I Wagner, was the NECBL Pitcher of the Year this past season.

Southern opens the season with a three-game, non-conference, series against Saint Anselm on Feb. 16-18 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
