Weekly Preview: SCSU Basketball Back In Action Against Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's

Southern Connecticut State University women's and men's basketball returns to Northeast-10 Conference play this weekend as they host Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's at James Moore Field House. The Owls welcome the Hawks on Wednesday, Jan. 3 when the women tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the St. Michael's Purple Knights come to town, with the women starting at 1:30 p.m. and the men set for a 3:30 p.m. start.

At halftime of Wednesday's men's basketball game, SCSU Athletics & Recreation will recognize its men's and women's cross country programs after a banner season in which both programs won NE10 and NCAA East Region Championships. FULL STORY

Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

Southern Connecticut and Saint Anselm currently sit tied for seventh place in the latest NE10 standings at 2-3 in conference play, while both programs are also 5-6 overall. Southern will look to bounce back from a non-conference to Dominican that ended a three-game winning streak, while Saint Anselm is coming a win after losing three straight games.

Notes: Katie Williamson leads the team in points (12.0) and rebounds (6.5) per game as well as 1.2 blocks per contest. Williamson has scored in double figures in four-straight games while averaging 14.8 points on 60% (24-40) shooting from the floor with 5.4 rebounds per game and eight blocks … Makenzie Helms leads the Owls with 3.7 assists pr game while also averaging 6.8 points … Delaney Haines checks in with 8.4 points per game while Julianna Bonilla is averaging 7.5 points … Renza Milner averages 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds while Hope Fox sits at 5.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game … Rheyna Steinauer enters the week with double digits in each of her last two games. Against Molloy, she had 12 points and seven rebounds as well as three steals and then followed with a 10 point, seven rebound night at Dominican.

Southern Connecticut men's basketball enters the week riding a six-game winning streak and stand at 9-2 overall including a 3-2 mark in the NE10. Saint Anselm is currently 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play while Saint Michael's is currently in first place in the NE10 stands at 5-0 in conference play and 9-2 overall.

Notes: Owls leading scorer Josh McGettigan was named to the NE10 Weekly Honor on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Last week, McGettigan torched Molloy for 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor including a pair of three-pointers while also grabbing a team-leading nine rebounds and also finished with two steals. It was McGettigan's fifth 20-point effort of the season while his nine rebounds match a season-high. For the year, McGettigan ranks fifth in the NE10 with 18.5 points per game, while also averaging 6.7 rebounds per contest … Marty Silvera is averaging 12.6 points per game, while also leading all NCAA Division student-athletes with 7.2 assists per game while his 2.6 steals rank 20th nationally … Cherif Diarra leads the NE10 with 9.1 rebounds per contest as well as 3.4 offensive rebounds per game, while also averaging 9.6 points per game … Kazell Stewart is averaging 13.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while his 1.8 blocks per game rank second in the NE10. Stewart also leads the conference, and ranks sixth nationally, with a 70.6% (60-85) field goal percentage.
