SCSU Women's Basketball Battles Nationally Ranked Assumption In Loss

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Assumption, 74-68, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 10-9 overall and 7-6 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 15-3 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
 
Katie Williamson and Makenzie Helms both totaled 21 points, each, to lead Southern while Jillian Martin had 13 points. Williamson added four rebounds while Helms had four assists for the Owls. Rheyna Steinauer came off the bench to score five points and grab five boards.


 
Southern opened the game with a 9-4 run as Williamson contributed seven points before Assumption, nationally ranked for the entire season, countered with a 12-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. Helms scored twice, with some help from a layup by Hope Fox, over the closing minutes of the first frame as the Greyhounds held a 21-16 lead heading into the second quarter. Both teams battled through the second quarter, but back-to-back three-pointers from Steinauer and Martin, followed by a layup by Steinauer at the end of the half sent the game to the break tied, 30-30.
 
Southern regained the lead less than a minute into the second half when Williamson scored on back-to-back possessions to give Southern a 34-33 lead. An Assumption three pushed their lead back to two points before Martin converted on a layup and the ensuing free throw after a foul on the play. With the Owls leading, 37-36, Assumption used a 9-0 run to take a 45-37 lead with 5:25 to play. The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 10, 49-39, with 1:20 to go in the third before Williamson scored on back-to-back plays to send the game to the final quarter with the Owls trailing, 49-43.
 
The final frame saw both teams tie, 25-25, with the Greyhounds pushing their lead to as many as 12 points with 6:19 to go. Southern doubled-up Assumption, 14-7, including a 7-0 run, to pull within four points, 64-60, with 1:39 to play. Assumption then converted on 10-of-12 from the free throw line to seal the win, 74-68.
 
Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 30 when it hosts American International for a NE10 matchup at James Moore Field House at 5:30 p.m. Looking ahead, the Owls' game against Assumption was its final Saturday afternoon game of the season while they will play five of their remaining eight games on the road.
