SCSU Women's Basketball Tops American International, 77-63

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated American International, 77-63, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 11-9 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

Makenzie Helms led the Owls in scoring for the third-straight game with 16 points as well as four rebounds and four assists. Julianna Bonilla hit 4-of-6 from three-point range on her way to a 14-point performance while Delaney Haines came off the bench to score 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from long range. As a team, the Owls hit a season-best nine three-pointers in the game. Jillian Martin had 10 points and five assists while Rheyna Steinauer scored 10 points in 10 minutes off the bench.



The first quarter saw a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than five points for the final 15 minutes of the first frame. Helms and Ashley Evans paced the Owls with four points apiece in the first quarter which saw the Owls hold a 13-12 lead.

The second quarter saw Delaney Haines get into the action with eight of the Owls' 19 points on a pair of three-pointers from in front of the AIC bench. Helms also had six points with the Owls hitting 5-of-7 from the free throw line including  pair from Haines with a second left to tie the game at the break.

In the third, both teams played even to a 42-42 with 3:33 to play before the Owls went on a 11-1 run to take a 53-43 lead with 1:30 to play. The Owls run was keyed by three-pointers from Haines and Bonilla and a three-point play by Steinauer on a drive to the basket that saw her sink the free throw. For the quarter, Southern outscored AIC, 21-14, with Bonilla (6) and Haines (5) leading the way.

The fourth quarter saw the Owls maintain a healthy lead down the stretch as Bonilla, Haynes and Steinauer all scored five points each while Southern outscored AIC, 24-17. The Owls converted 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter while also hitting 3-of-4 from three-point range, with the last one by Hope Fox with 15 seconds remaining gave the Owls the 14-point win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 3 when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to take on College of Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m. Southern returns to James Moore Field House on Wednesday, Feb. 7 to host Pace at 5:30 p.m.
