SCSU Football Tops Post, 31-27

WATERBURY, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University football defeated Post, 31-27, in the first Northeast-10 Conference game between the two teams. With the win, the Owls improved to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NE10 while Post dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
 
E'Lijah Gray carried the ball 27 times and finished with 204 yards and a touchdown, including a 46-yard run, while also adding two catches for 19 yards. It was Gray's second career 200-yard rushing game, dating back to last season's matchup against Post. Keith Ridley was 22-for-31 for 204 yards with two touchdowns. Luke Gadson led the team with six catches for 45 yards while Kyle Villani and Tarik Hetmyer both had touchdown catches for the Owls. John Amani also rushed for 30 yards and had a four-year touchdown run.

Defensively, Joe DiGello had eight tackles, including one for a loss, as well as a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. Youseff Gamel had two quarterback hurries and a sack while Derek Omoregie recorded his second sack of the season. Shane Kanterman had five tackles, including one for a loss, while Joenel Figueroa had five tackles, including one for a loss, and two pass breakups.



Both teams traded touchdowns through the first quarter, which ended with a 14-14 tie. Gray scored the game's first points on a four-yard touchdown run that capped a nine-play, 58-yard drive. Post answered two minutes later before Amaning scored on a four-yard run.

The Owls then muffed a punt that gave Post the ball back on the Owls' 21-yard line. Isaiah Emmanuel found a hole on the first play to tie it, 14-14. Post then stopped Southern on the first drive of the second quarter and scored on their next possession to take a 21-14 lead.

Now trailing, Gray took off on the first play of the Owls' next possession for a 35-yard run. Ridley then hooked up with Jaylon Tucker for a 30-yard reception that gave the Owls the ball on Post's 18-yard line. After a one-yard run by Amaning and a two-yard run by Gray, Ridley found Hetmyer in the corner of the end zone to tie at 21-21. Daniel Benzi's field goal from 34 yards gave the Owls' a 24-21 lead with four seconds left in the first half.

Post scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, but had the extra point denied, as they regained the lead, 27-24. With 1:46 to play in the third, Joe DiGello forced a fumble and recovered it at Post's 20 yard line. The Eagles' turnover led to a Ridley 19-yard touchdown pass to Villani that gave the Owls a 31-27 lead. Post had two final possessions, the first of which ended with a pass breakup by Chris White on 4th and 7 after Ray Magliozzi hurried the quarterback into a throw. With one last shot, Post drove down to the Southern Connecticut 21-yard line and faced a 4th and 5, but Youseff Gamel came up with the sack to force the turnover on downs. Southern was able to run off the final 2:51 for the win.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when it hosts New Haven for The Rivalry for The Elm City Cup at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.

The game is also part of Southern Connecticut's Hall of Fame Weekend in which SCSU Athletics & Recreation will honor SCSU Football alum and legendary track & field coach James Barber on his induction to the NE10 Hall of Fame as well as the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame's Class of 2020.
