SCSU Football Falls to New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University football lost to New Haven, 21-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, Southern dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the NE10 while New Haven improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Joe DiGello had a season-best and game-high 13 tackles with one for a loss. Joenel Figueroa had eight tackles, including a team-best three solo tackles. Shaun Martin had two tackles for a loss while Derek Omoregie had seven tackles and two quarterback hurries.

Offensively, Keith Ridley was 21-for-33 for 226 yards while Jaylon Tucker had five receptions for a game-high 92 yards.

Southern fell behind early as New Haven scored on its first two possessions of the day to jump out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. The two teams played back-and-forth for the second quarter to head into the break with the Chargers holding a two-score lead.

Coming out of halftime, UNH used up eight minutes of the third quarter before scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-0 lead. Southern powered its way downfield on its next possession, moving the chains 85 yards on 11 plays but was stopped on the doorstep.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26 when it hosts Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. That game will be played will be the Owls' Blitz Pink day in support of breast cancer awareness.
