SCSU Football Falls To Franklin Pierce, 35-24

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University football lost to Franklin Pierce, 35-24, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, Southern dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the NE10 while Franklin Pierce improved to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

The highlight of the game was Shawn Martin's 90-yard kick-off return for a touchdown that gave Southern a 23-17 lead early in the fourth quarter. Martin became the first Southern Connecticut student-athlete to return a kickoff for a touchdown since Kendall Thomas returned a kick against Stonehill 98 yards for a touchdown on Sept. 9, 20216. Offensively, Keith Ridley was 15-for-28 for 263 yards and a touchdown pass to Divine Edwards. E'Lijah Gray also scored for the Owls on a goalline draw that gave Southern an early lead. Tarik Hetmyer also had the Owls' longest reception of the season - a 90-yard catch that set up the Owls' first touchdown of the day.

On defense, Kuhron Walker and Derek Omoregie led the Owls with 10 tackles each. Omoregie also had a sack and another tackle for a loss with two quarterback hurries. Walker and Ray Magliozzi also recorded a sack while Quentin Asiedu had eight tackles. Joenel Figueroa also had an interception and broke up two more passes.

Gray's first quarter touchdown were the game's first points and the only points scored in the first quarter. Daniel Benzi booted a 27-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give Southern a 10-0 lead. After Franklin Pierce got on the board to make it 10-7, Ridley hooked up with Edwards to give Southern a 17-7 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Franklin Pierce put another seven points on the board to pull within three points, 17-14 with 11:39 to play in the third quarter. Towards the end of the quarter, Andreas Picarelli's 66-yard punt came to settle at Franklin Pierce's one-yard line. The Ravens then went on a 19-play, 99-yard drive to take a 21-17 lead.

On the ensuring kickoff, the Owls' Shawn Martin broke from the pile at midfield and ended up in a foot race down the stretch. Martin had a step on a Ravens' defender and managed to dive over the goalline to give Southern a 24-21 lead. That proved to be the Owls' final points of the afternoon before Franklin Pierce scored twice in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Owls play their final home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 2 when it hosts Pace at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. Prior to the start of the game, Southern will host Senior Day festivities and also Military Appreciation Day at Jess Dow Field.
