SCSU Football Drops Tough Battle To Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football saw its 2024 Homecoming matchup against Assumption slip away in the second half as the Owls lost to the Greyhounds, 35-28. With the loss, Southern dropped 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the NE10 while Assumption remained  undefeated in conference play (2-0) and improved to 3-1.

The Owls held the advantage in total offensive yards and time of possession while Owls quarterback Keith Ridley almost doubled-up his counterpart in passing yardage. In the end, it was an 86-yard Assumption return off a blocked field goal attempt by Daniel Benzi for a touchdown that stood as the difference.

Offensively, Ridley had an afternoon as his season-best 225 yards on 21-of-33 passing put him over the 3,000-yard mark for his career with the Owls. Ridley also accounted for three of the Owls' four touchdowns as he passed for one and ran two more in. Ridley has now rushed for a touchdown in three-straight games, totaling four over the span. E'Lijah Gray rushed for 111 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown and also had a catch for six yards. Luke Gadson led the Owls with four catches and 59 yards.

Defensively, Joe DiGello continued to impressed as he totaled a team-high eight tackles with a sack while also recovering a fumble that he forced. Kuhron Walker had six tackles while Ray Magliozzi had four tackles and a sack.

After Assumption scored on its first possession, Southern had a ball trailing 7-0. With the ball at midfield, Gray ripped off a 27-yard run up the middle that put the Owls on the Assumption 18. Ridley's pass to Jack Hennessy fell short, but a defender was flagged for pass interference. With the ball on Assumption's five-yard line, Ridley sold the hand-off to Gray and then powered his way up the middle for the Owls' first score.

Opening up the second quarter, Assumption scored to take a 14-7 lead. Southern answered with a 16-play, 79-yard drive that ended with Gray running in a nine-yard touchdown. Tied at 14-14, Assumption answered again to take a 21-14 lead. With two minutes to go in the half, Ridley led the team down the field, with 14 yards rushing from Gray on the drive, before finding Jaylon Tucker for a 14-yard touchdown to tie the game again, 21-21.

Coming out of the half, the two teams traded possessions before the Owls got the ball with 5:44 to go in the quarter. Ridley went no-huddle, and opened with a 17-yard pass to Seth Westover, followed by a pass to Divine Edwards and a Gray run before hitting Westover again for 20 yards. From the Assumption 23, Kieran Falzon powered his way through the Greyhounds' defensive line for a 12-yard run to give the Owls the ball on Assumptions' 11 yard line. The Owls couldn't move the ball on the next three plays and brought on freshman kicker Daniel Benzi. Benzi's 20-yard attempt was blocked by Assumption's Jaron Wilson and picked by Shakeer McPherson, who took it 86 yards to give Assumption a 28-21 lead.

Early in the fourth, and needing a play, DiGello knocked the ball loose of Assumption quarterback Jay Kastantin's hands and recovered it. With the ball, Ridley once again moved the Owls offense and completed passes to Shawn Martin, Luke Gadson, Tarik Hetmyer and Ben Jax before running the ball in on his won to tie the game at 28-28. With nine minutes to play, Assumption once-again answered with a six-minute drive that saw Jamar Ballard rush for a 16-yard touchdown to give them a 35-28 lead.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it travels to Waterbury, Conn. to face Post in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 1 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
