Natalia Fiato Scores Game-Winning Goal As Owls Top New Haven, 4-3 In Overtime

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut field hockey's Natalia Fiato scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Owls defeated New Haven in overtime when  in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in West Haven, Conn. With the win, Southern improved to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 while New Haven dropped to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The win for the Owls was its first on New Haven's home turf.

Fiato had a night as she also had an assist on Southern's first goal of the game. Her game winner came off a defensive zone stop by McKenzie Fairfax, who then cleared the ball out of the Owls' defensive zone to Fiato at midfield. Fiato made an incredible play, beating the New Haven defense to the cage and scoring the game-winning goal.

Keana Criscuolo scored twice in the Owls' win, with both markers giving the Owls a lead.  Taylor Leckey's second goal of the season put the Owls on the board and Isabella Taylor and Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti both had assists. In goal, Lyndsay Troisi had seven saves in the win.

After New Haven scored the game's first goal, Southern's Taylor Leckey and Keana Criscuolo scored two quick goals to take an early lead, 2-1, in the game's first 10 minutes. New Haven answered shortly after the Owls' second goal to tie it, 2-2, through the first quarter.

In the 8th minute of play, the Owls earned a corner as Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti set for the insert. She found stick stop Natalia Fiato at the top of the circle who handed the ball to Leckey. Leckey and Fiato played the ball back-and-forth before Leckey converted to tie the game at 1-1. It was Leckey's first goal of the season, while Rodriguez Ricchiuti picked up her team-leading fourth assist. Fiato's assist was her first of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Ruby Webb broke up a New Haven clear at midfield and took off into the Chargers' defensive zone. Webb shrugged off two defenders and then streaked down the sideline before veering towards the goal. As Criscuolo slid behind a defender along the goal line, Webb delivered a brilliant pass between two New Haven sticks to find Criscuolo who sent a shot to the opposite post.
With the game tied 2-2 after New Haven scored on a corner, Criscuolo scored her second goal of the game to give the Owls a 3-2 lead in the second quarter. Isabella Taylor got the restart along the sideline 30 yards away from the goal line, took a dribble and then ripped a pass across field to Criscuolo in front of the cage. The Owls' freshman redirected the pass and beat the Chargers' keeper to give the Owls the one-goal lead.

New Haven tied the game for the second time in regulation, late in the fourth quarter, to force overtime. In overtime, it looked like the home team would threaten to end it with a corner early in extended play. A pass from outside the circle was deflected wide of the cage. On the ensuing possession, Fairfax came up with a crucial steal and made a cross-field pass to the midfield to Fiato. Fiato blitzed through the Chargers' defensive zone, drew triple coverage and was able to get off the shot that found its home in the back of the Chargers' cage for the win.
Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm at 1 p.m.
