SCSU Men's Basketball Falls Short Against St. Thomas Aquinas 88-77

Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball dropped their second game of the season against St. Thomas Aquinas College 88-77. The Owls finish the College of Staten Island Tournament of Heroes with a 1-1 record.

Antonio Chandler led the Owls with 20 points on the day, also collecting 12 rebounds and three blocks. Sean James chipped in with 14 of his own, with Albert Vargas and Isacc Hester scoring 13 apiece. Vargas also finished with nine assists to lead the team. Cherif Diarra put up five points and seven rebounds, also notching his first career three-pointer. Shaun Arnold scored 27 for the Spartans to lead all scorers.

It was a back and fourth game early, but the Spartans were eventually able to pull away and go up by double figures around halfway though the first half. They were able to maintain this lead through the first half, going into the break leading Southern by 10, 30-40.

In what would become a recurring theme of the second half, the Owls climbed their way back into the game, cutting the lead to six at the 17:40 mark and taking the lead soon after on an Antonio Chandler layup. Southern battled back and fourth against STAC, with a few threes from Vargas, Hester, Christian McClease, and Jack Margoupis giving them several small leads. However, the Spartans refused to go away, never trailing by more than three in the second half. They were able to pull back away from the Owls, going up by 11 with 4:22 left. The Owls threatened down the final stretch, cutting the lead down to single digits, but STAC continued to answer back until the final buzzer, winning 88-77.

The Owls return on Saturday, November 16th to take on Saint Michael's in Colchester, Vermont.
