SCSU Football Defeats Pace, 35-30, In Final Home Game Of 2024 Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University football defeated Pace, 35-30, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win the Owls improved to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the NE10 while Pace dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The game was also Southern's last game at Jess Dow Field this season.

Keith Ridley was 25-for-43 for a career-best 353 yards with three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown. Ridley was also picked off on a tipped ball – which is of-note as the Owls' graduate student was the last quarterback in all of NCAA College Football to throw an interception this season.

Ridley now stands at 4,201 career passing yards in 19 games with the Owls over the last two seasons, which makes him the ninth quarter in Southern history to pass for 4,000 yards in his career while ranking eighth all-time. He also became the eighth Southern Connecticut quarterback with 30 career touchdown passes. In addition, his 372 career completions are the third-most in program history.

E'Lijah Gray ran for 127 yards on 20 carries for a 6.4 yards per carry average while Jaylon Tucker had five catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Luke Gadson and Mike Strachan also had touchdown catches in the Owls' win.

Defensively, Quinton Haughton had a 21-yard interception returned for a touchdown that pushed the Owls' lead into double digits late in the third quarter. Kuhron Walker led Southern with eight tackles while Joe DiGello had seven tackles, a sack, one pass breakup as well as three quarterback hurries. DiGello now has 220 career tackles, which is good for 10th in program history. Chris White led Southern with three tackles for a loss including two sacks that accounted for 14 yards. Quinten Asiedu also had a season-best five tackles with two hurries.

Southern took a 7-0 lead on its first possession of the game when Ridley connected with Michael Strachan for a 16-yard touchdown that capped a five-play, 66-yard drive. Following a Pace field goal, Ridley capped a six-play, 90-yard drive with a 15-yard strike to Tucker that gave the Owls a 14-6 lead.

Pace answered with a 35-yard field goal before Jalen Johnson had a tipped pass from Ridley land in his hands that he returned for a 41-yard touchdown that cut Southern's lead to 14-12 early in the second half. On their next possession, Ridley once-again took the Owls down field before hitting Luke Gadson with a 21-yard pass that gave Southern a 21-12 lead.

After Pace scored on a 39-yard pass that pulled the Setters to within three points, 21-18, the Owls turned the ball over and then went back on defense. Quinton Haughton picked off a Pace pass and scampered 21 yards for a touchdown that gave Southern a 28-24 lead. Pace scored again, with Ethan Coady connected with Robert Ennis for a 28-yard reception that kept the game within a touchdown, 28-24, but Ridley finished off the Setters with a one-yard touchdown run after a 13-play, 83-yard drive.

Southern is idle for Week 10 of the Northeast-10 Conference schedule but will complete the 2024 season on Saturday, Nov. 16 at American International College.
