SCSU Men's Basketball Cruises to 79-59 Win Against SNHU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball defeated Southern New Hampshire, 79-59, in the Owls' 2024 home opener at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference while Southern New Hampshire dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Albert Vargas paced the Owls with 20 points while converting on 4-of-4 from three-point range. First-year Owl Christian McClease had a career-best 14 points including 11 in the second half. Chris Joe had season-best 14 points, five rebounds and five assists while Isaac Hester totaled 11 points. Elijah Wood also scored his first points as an Owl as he hit the first three three-pointers he attempted on his way to a nine-point night. Antonio Chandler had nine points and 11 rebounds.



As a team, the Owls hit a season-best 14 three-pointers while shooting 51.9% (14-27) from long range and 49.2% (31-63) from the floor.

Both teams played back-and-forth over the game's first eight minutes, with SNHU holding a 13-12 lead with 11:59 to play in the first half. Southern outscored the Owls, 15-10, over the next four minutes, keyed by Wood's three three-pointers to take a 27-21 lead with 7:43 until the break. Southern then took off on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes as they converted on 3-of-4 from three-point range and 6-of-10 from the floor to take a 40-25 lead with two minutes to play and then took a 42-28 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Southern unloaded a 21-11 run over the half's first 10 minutes to jump out to a 53-39 lead with 9:33 to go. SNHU mounted a comeback in the form of a 12-0 run to cut Southern Connecticut's lead to 63-51 with 7:47 to play. Southern pushed its lead to 26 points – it's largest of the game – after outscoring the Penmen, 16-4, over the next five minutes before Southern New Hampshire closed the game with a 6-1 run.

Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi at 7:30 p.m.
