GARDEN CITY, NY. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball cruised to their sixth-straight win of the season, with a 73-39 victory over Adelphi University in an NE10 matchup on Tuesday night. The Owls improved to an overall record of 6-0 and an NE10 record of 3-0, while the Panthers dropped to an overall record of 5-2 and an NE10 record of 3-0. It is the Owls' largest margin of victory against an NE10 team since defeating Saint Anselm by 36 points, in a 105-69 win on Feb. 6, 2022 and it is the fewest points allowed by Southern Connecticut against an NE10 team since Nov. 30, 2022 against Pace, where the Owls held the Setters to just 33 points.
Rheyna Steinauer led the team with 16 points, she shot 6-for-9 from the floor, 60% from the three-point line, grabbed nine rebounds, had three assists and a steal.
Hope Fox totaled 14 points, had seven rebounds and a team-best of five assists, while adding two steals and a block.
Katie Williamson and
Delaney Haines both had 10 points. Both were 2-for-2 from the free-throw line as Williamson had three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Haines grabbed five boards, had three assists and a block against Adelphi.
Jillian Martin recorded nine points, was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, 100% from the three-point line, had four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.
Ally Sentance had a team-best of 10 rebounds and four points.
In the first quarter, the Owls started their scoring off with a made layup by
Katie Williamson and an assist by
Hope Fox. Haines led the team with six points as
Ally Sentance,
Jillian Martin and Fox all added to the Owls' total. As a team, they shot 6-for-11 from the floor, while recording three steals and nine rebounds, to take a 14-8 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Southern continued with their strong momentum. Two minutes in, after a steal by Martin,
Rheyna Steinauer made a and-one, to increase their lead. From there, Southern went on a 16-8 run to finish out the quarter. Steinauer scored nine points, while
Renza Milner recorded four points. Southern dominated the points in the paint, 22-8 and as a team, were 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, to put them ahead 33-16.
In the third quarter, the Owls outscored the Panthers, 30-12, as the Owls were 12-for-16 from the floor, were 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and 9-for-10 from the two-point range. Southern out-rebounded Adelphi, 10-3 and nine of those came from the defensive end. Fox recorded eight points, grabbed two rebounds and had three assists in the third quarter alone. Steinauer added in seven points and three rebounds of her own.
In the fourth quarter, Adelphi outscored Southern, 11-10; however, the Owls kept their lead and finished the game with a 73-39 victory.
Arianna Gerkin recorded four points, while
Marisa Lee had two points and a steal, while Williamson made two free-throws and Haines had a made basket to round out the score column for Southern.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup against Bloomfield College in the Moore Field House.
