SCSU Men's Basketball's Vargas Hits Game-Winner In 82-80 Win At College of Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball defeated the College of Staten Island, 82-80, courtesy of a buzzer beater from Albert Vargas that capped a back-and-fourth battle in the Owls' season opener. With the win, Southern opens the year at 1-0 while CSI goes to 0-1 on the year.

Vargas dropped in 18 points in his Owls' debut after transferring from Monroe College this season. Sean James had a game-high 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting from three-point range while Cherif Diarra flirted with a triple double with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as well as two blocks. Antonio Chandler finished with nine points and eight rebounds while Isaac Hester had eight points including a big three-pointer down the stretch after hitting on 2-of-3 from long range.

The first half saw the home team jump out to a 5-0 lead before Southern responded with a 20-0 run to take a 15-point lead with 14 minutes to play in the half. Southern pushed its lead to 19 points, 42-23, but the Dolphins responded with a 15-5 run to close the half and pull within seven points, 45-38, at the break.

In the first half, Sean James knocked down 5-of-8 from three-point range to post a game-high 17 points.

Staten Island kept chipping away and used a 24-5 run over the final four minutes of the first half and four minutes of the second half, capped off by a 9-0 run, to tie the game at 47-47 with just under 16 minutes to play in the game. The Dolphins took the lead, 51-48, to cap a 14-6 run coming out of the half.

From that point, neither team led by more than three points until the Owls started to pull away and pushed their lead to six points, 64-58. Staten Island outscored Southern, 8-4, over a two-minute to pull within a point, 67-66. Southern countered with an 9-1 run that saw back-to-back three-pointers from James and Vargas to give Southern a 75-68. With a 78-72 lead with just under two minutes to play, CSI tied it, 80-80, with an 8-2 run with five seconds left.

Left without a timeout and overtime looming, James inbounded the ball to Vargas who took it the length of the court before losing, and regaining, possession in the paint before floating the game-winner over the outstretched hand of a leaping defender that touched net as time expired.

The Owls are back in action at CSI's Tournament of Heroes on Sunday, Nov. 10 when they face St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
