SCSU Women's Basketball's Comeback Win Against Molloy Highlighted By Williamson's 1,000th Career Point

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball overcame a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to top Molloy, 68-64, to improve to 10-2 overall on the season. Molloy dropped to 6-6 in the loss. The Owls have now won three-straight games as it heads into Northeast-10 Conference play, while also wrapping up its non-conference slate at 7-0.

Headlining the Owls' win was Katie Williamson's 21-point effort that included her 1,000th career point. Williamson became the 25th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark and in the process became the first player in SCSU Women's Basketball history to total 1,000 points and 100 blocks in her career. She also currently boasts over 600 rebounds and 100 assists with the Owls.
 
Williamson also totaled eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks – all team highs in the game. Hope Fox scored 15 points while Delaney Haines finished with 12. Rheyna Steinauer had nine points and eight rebounds in the Owls' win. Ally Sentance also played a season-high 28 minutes off the bench and finished with eight rebounds, four assists and a season-best six steals.


 
Southern appeared to be in control to start the game as it held a 18-13 lead after the first quarter. In the first frame, both Williamson and Steinauer had eight points apiece to lead the charge. Southern held its largest lead of the game, 20-13, with nine minutes to play in the half. Southern went cold from the floor for the rest of the period as Sentance's lone three-pointer held as the Owls' only points heading into halftime. Molloy outscored Southern, 13-3, to take a 26-23 lead into the break.
 
Coming out of halftime, Haines knocked down a three-pointer to tie game before the Lions used an 18-5 run to take a 44-31 lead with 3:15 to play. Molloy controlled the scoring as the Owls hit on just one of six attempts from the floor but managed to convert on 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
 
With 8:34 remaining in the game, Molloy took its largest lead of the matchup, 54-41, with 8:34 to play. From there, Southern turned the game around as they posted a 17-4 run – led by five points each from Maya Henry and Hope Fox – to take a 58-56 lead with 3:35 to go. Molloy scored the next four points to take a 60-58 lead. From there, the Owls outscored Molloy, 8-1, down the stretch with Williamson pouring in six points as the team hit on 6-fo-6 from the free throw line to seal the win.
 
As a team, the Owls converted on 24-of-29 from the free throw line, including 20-of-22 in the second half. It was also a 9-for-14 showing from the floor in the fourth quarter that helped the Owls in their come-back bid on its way to picking up the crucial non-conference in.
 
Southern returns to action with a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against Pace on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
