SCSU Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Saint Anselm 82-72

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball was defeated by Saint Anselm, 82-72 in a Northeast-10 matchup on Wednesday, December 4th. The Owls drop to 3-3 on the season, 2-2 in NE10 play.

Isaac Hester led the Owls, knocking down five threes on his way to a season-high 21 points. He also chipped in with six rebounds. Albert Vargas, Antonio Chandler, and Cherif Diarra all recorded double-doubles. Vargas scored 16 and logged 10 assists, and Chandler scored 11 points and collected 11 rebounds. Diarra grabbed 11 boards and scored 10 in his return from injury. Sean James added eight points and four rebounds.

It was a tight-knit first half of play that saw neither team take a double-digit lead. After trading baskets for the first five minutes, the Hawks were able to go on a small run to retake the lead, which they would hold for the rest of the half. The Owls shot 42% from the field, only going 2-9 from three, but their strong defense would help keep them in the game, led by a returning Cherif Diarra, who ended the night with two blocks and two steals. Saint Anselm went on a 9-3 run over the final four minutes to enter the break up 43-36.

The two teams again traded baskets to kick off the second half, with the Hawks holding their lead. Isaac Hester caught fire, knocking down four threes in a short stretch and helping to bring the Owls within three. Saint Anselm, however, held strong, and never lost their lead, continuing to answer Southern's makes with makes of their own. They thrived inside, outscoring the Owls 50-34 in the category. They pulled away in the end, winning 82-72.

The Owls return home this weekend to take on Bentley in another NE10 battle at 3:30 on Saturday, December 7th.
