SCSU Men's Basketball Defeated by Bentley, 90-89 in Overtime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball was defeated by Bentley, 90-89 in overtime. The Owls drop to 3-4 on the season, 2-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Albert Vargas exploded offensively, leading the team with 32 points. He also added four assists and a steal. Cherif Diarra recorded his second consecutive double-double, tallying 10 points and a team-leading 16 boards. He also tallied three assists, blocked three shots and tallied two steals,. Over the last two games, he has recorded five blocks and four steals. Antonio Chandler scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Sean James scored 14.

It was a back-and-fourth affair throughout the entire game. There were nine lead changes and 10 ties, with the largest lead for either team being only 10 points. The Owls jumped out to a lead early, thanks to another hot start from Vargas, but the Falcons quickly erased the advantage. Neither team could find a rhythm from deep, with Southern going 6-16 in the first half and Bentley going 2-7. The Falcons' bench players were very impactful early, as Bentley ultimately ended up with 28 bench points. After the first half, Bentley led 39-37.

Southern found their shooting stroke in the second half, knocking down four of five, but Bentley kept pace, going 4-8. Both teams continued to trade blows in a heavyweight, offensive battle, with neither team able to go ahead by double digits. The Falcons led by a small margin for a stretch, but the Owls hung with them. The teams exchanged clutch baskets, with Albert Vargas again at the center of the action for Southern. Bentley tied the game with a free throw with 2.5 second left, and Vargas' runner rimmed out, and the teams went to overtime.

In OT, the game stayed tight, with Vargas again fueling the Owls offense. Fouls, however, ended up playing a massive role. Southern was whistled for 27 fouls, and Bentley was only called for 15. Vargas, Antonio Chandler, and Christian McClease all fouled out, with Isaac Hestet and Jack Margoupis also called for four apiece. A few clutch free throws from the Falcons gave them the lead, and Sean James' last minute three was off target, giving Bentley a 90-89 win.

The Owls travel to Philadelphia for their next matchup as they take on Holy Family in a non-conference battle on Saturday, December 14th.
