New Haven responded with a 9-2 run to push its lead to 12 points, 29-17, with 4:42 to go in the half, but Southern outscored the Chargers, 13-6, in the closing minutes before the break to send the game into the half with New Haven leading, 35-30.

Southern continued to battle to open the third quarter before taking a 43-42 lead on a Hope Fox layup with 4:02 to go in the quarter.
