COLCHESTER, VT. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball fell to NE10 opponent, Saint Michael's College, 91-80 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 17-8 and an NE10 record of 11-8, as the Purple Knights improved to an overall record of 19-6 and an NE10 record of 15-4.
Marty Silvera had his first triple-double of his career with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Saint Michael's.
Kazell Stewart had 20 points, grabbed five rebounds, and a block.
Josh McGettigan recorded another double-double for the Owls with a team-best of 28 points, as he shot 10-for-13 from the floor, grabbing 13 rebounds and shooting 100% from the free-throw line.
Mason Williams added seven points as
Cherif Diarra had six points with eight rebounds for the Owls.
The Purple Knights started off the first half with 35 points over the Owls' 29 points. Southern Connecticut outrebounded their opponent, 27-17. It was a true back and forth game between the two teams. Once the Owls would get closer to the Saint Michael's lead, the Purple Knights would respond. Going into half, Saint Michael's held a six point lead over Southern Connecticut.
In the second half, Southern Connecticut started to once again grow closer to Saint Michael's lead. With 12 minutes left,
Kazell Stewart hit a layup that got the Owls within two points, to make the score 55-53 in favor of the Purple Knights.
However, Saint Michael's just kept putting down shots on many of their possessions and their lead continued to grow. Despite the Owls' best efforts, the Purple Knights held onto their 91-80 victory.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. against Southern New Hampshire University in an NE10 matchup at the James Moore Field House in New Haven, Connecticut.
