MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Southern Connecticut was defeated by Saint Thomas Aquinas College 10-8 in a non conference matchup Sunday at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This loss brings the Owls overall record to 6-2 on the season.
Jake Chacho lead the Owls offense going 2 for 5 with a single, triple and three runs batted in (RBI). Chacho's day started in the top half of the first inning with a bases loaded single scoring Jack Drewry from third. The first inning would not be the last of Chacho's offense. In the top half of the third, Chacho smacked a ball down the right field line and turned on the jets legging out a triple scoring Iziah Walker and Jake Pelletier.
Chacho's triple would not be the last of the Owls third inning offense, as Jake Gruttadauria doubled to left scoring Chacho giving the Owls a 4-0 lead. However the Saint Thomas Aquinas offense would erupt for eight runs on six hits in the bottom half of the inning, giving them the 8-4 lead.
John Bucci would come in to relief throwing two and a third innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out one, giving the Owls a chance to climb back into the game which is exactly what they did in the top of the sixth.
The inning started with Josh Wetteman hitting a sacrifice fly to right scoring Gruttadauria from third. From there, Talavera grounded into a fielders choice scoring Derrick Jagello which brought the Owls within two to a 6-8 deficit. The Owls would tack on one more run on a Jagello double in the 7th and another on a Tyshaun Diaz single in the eighth scoring Chad Fedeli; however, that would not be enough as Saint Thomas Aquinas tacked on two more runs late taking the win 8-10.
Southern is back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. for their home opener as they host Mercy University in a non-conference matchup at the Ballpark in New Haven, CT.
