SCSU Men's Basketball Downs Saint Rose, 87-78

ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated College of Saint Rose, 87-78, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Albany, N.Y. With the win, the Owls improved to 14-7 overall and 8-7 in conference play while Saint Rose dropped to 9-12 overall and 6-9 in the NE10.

Josh McGettigan led the Owls with 22 points and also had six rebounds and two blocks while Marty Silvera totaled 20 points and a season-high eight steals with four assists in the Owls' win. Kazell Stewart finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the year while adding three blocks and Cherif Diarra totaled 16 points and six rebounds. Silvera's eight steals give him 58 for the year and 137 for his career at Southern Connecticut which ties Mike McCurdy (2001-05) for ninth place all-time.



Both teams used early runs to play back-and-forth to open the game before a Sean James three-pointer at 10:45 made it a one-point game, 16-15. Southern regained the lead, 25-24, with just under five minutes in the half before Saint Rose took control of the lead and tied the game, 27-27, with 3:18 to play before the break. The Owls outscored Saint Rose, 10-6, in the final three minutes to take a 37-32 lead into the break. McGettigan and Diarra both led the Owls with eight points apiece while Stewart had seven and Silvera had six.

The second half was all Southern Connecticut as the Owls never gave up the lead. Silvera and McGettigan both scored 14 points in the second half while Stewart and Diarra had eight points each as the Owls outscored Saint Rose, 50-46, in the final frame. Southern took a 14-point, 61-47, with 10:46 to go after doubling up Saint Rose, 18-9, over a six-minute stretch that saw McGettigan score nine of his 14 second-half points. The Owls then outscored Saint Rose over the next five minutes to take its biggest lead of the game, 74-58, with 5:21 on the clock.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 when it hosts Pace at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
