Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated the University of New Haven, 60-44, in the First Round of the NE10 Tournament on Friday night. Southern improved to an overall record of 17-12 and an NE10 record of 13-9. New Haven finished the season with an overall record of 8-19 and an NE10 record of 4-18.
Julianna Bonilla led the team with 13 points, as she shot a team-best 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from the three-point line. In addition, Bonilla had five rebounds, three assists, two steals against the Chargers.
Katie Williamson and
Rheyna Steinauer had 11 points each for the Owls. Williamson had a team-best of seven rebounds, a team-best of two blocks, a team-best of three steals and two assists. Steinauer was 3-for-5 from the free-throw line, grabbed four rebounds and a steal against New Haven.
Delaney Haines recorded nine points for the Owls, had two steals and was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Makenzie Helms had eight points, a team-best of five assists, two rebounds and had a block.
Renza Milner had four points, was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and grabbed three rebounds.
In the first quarter, Southern Connecticut jumped to a quick start as they had 12 points to New Haven's six points. In the second quarter, the Owls continued to have their strong momentum, as they held the Chargers to only six points once again. Southern outscored New Haven, 30-12 in the first half alone.
In the third quarter, the Chargers came out of the locker room, ready to make their comeback. New Haven outscored the Owls, 19-13 up until the last second of the quarter, when
Julianna Bonilla made a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer. The Owls held on to their 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Southern got their scoring started with a made layup by
Makenzie Helms. The Chargers inched closer to the Owls' lead, but Southern Connecticut continued to make their shots, that extended their double-digit lead. The Owls finished with a 60-44 victory, that would send them back to the NE10 Quarterfinals for the third-straight season.
The Owls will travel to Albany, NY on Sunday, March 3 at 4:00 p.m. against the College of Saint Rose in the Quarterfinals of the NE10 Tournament. Tickets for the game will be $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth under 18 and free for NE10 students with valid ID.
