Box Score COLCHESTER, VT. – No. 8 Southern Connecticut lost a heartbreaker in the NCAA Division II East Regional First Round against No. 1 Saint Michael's, 68-62. With the loss, the Owls close the season with a record of 22-11 while the Purple Knights advance in the NCAA tournament.

Cherif Diarra led the Owls 16 points and 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. Josh McGettigan had 19 points, with 11 coming in the second half, as well as five rebounds and two steals. Mason Williams hit a pair of three's on his way to a 10-point night while Marty Silvera had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.



The first half saw a tight game from wire to wire as it featured five lead changes, while both teams produced game-swinging runs. With the game tied, 13-13, Southern blitzed the home team, 10-2, with Cherif Diarra accounting for six of the Owls' 10 points as they jumped out to a 22-15 lead with 11 minutes to play in the half. Saint Michael's countered to gain the lead, 30-29, with 6:31 to go before the break. The Purple Knights pushed their lead to six, 37-31, with 4:51 to play, but Southern closed out the half with a 7-2 run to cut their deficit to a point, 39-38, at the half.  

The second half saw the battle between the two Northeast-10 Conference foes go back-and-forth. Also matching the energy from the first half, there were 18 lead changes between the two teams, with neither team leading by more than four points until the final minute of the game. St. Michael's then outscored the Owls, 14-7, over the game's final six minutes to secure the win.
