SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To SNHU, 75-60, In NE10 Championship Game

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball's run to a conference title ended with a 75-60 loss to Southern New Hampshire in the 2024 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Game at Stan Spirou Field House in Manchester, N.H.

Marty Silvera led the Owls with 21 points and seven rebounds with three assists while Josh McGettigan finished with 12 points and seven boards. Cherif Diarra had six points and seven rebounds with three blocks. Silvera and McGettigan were named to the NE10 All-Tournament Team following the game.

Both teams were slow out of the gate as they totaled just nine points between both lineups throught eh first five minutes of the game. Trading baskets early on, SNHU pushed its lead to four, 8-4, before a layup by Diarra and three-pointer from Sean James made it 10-9, Penmen. Southern New Hampshire stepped on the gas after James' three-pointer and went on a 12-1 run that gave them a 22-10 lead with 6:57 to play. Southern managed to regroup and outscored SNHU down the stretch, 17-11, with Silvera scoring 10 of the Owls' 17 points, to head into the break trailing by six, 33-27.

Through the first 15 minutes the Penmen managed to push their lead to 17 points, 48-31, as they outscored the Owls, 15-4, over the second half's first five minutes. Southern Connecticut never recovered as the Penmen used another run to take its biggest lead of the game, 61-40, with 7:26 on the clock.

McGettigan, harassed since the jump by the Penmen defense, managed to crack through and scored 12 points in the final 12 minutes of the game while Mason Williams and Logan Bagshaw also hit on a pair of three's.

Southern will await the decision of the NCAA East Region selection committee to learn its fate for a possible At-Large bid, which will be televised on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 10:30 p.m.
