SCSU Baseball Defeats Adelphi, 15-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Adelphi, 15-4, in the third game of their Northeast-10 Conference series in New Haven, Conn. With wins in two of three games this weekend, Southern improved to 17-13 overall and 5-6 in the NE10 while Adelphi dropped to 11-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Owls starter Mike Szturma improved to 3-1 on the year after giving up four runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits over fiving innings. Keegan Daigle picked up the save after logging four scoreless innings in relief. At the plate, Devin Pelletier was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and four RBI as well as three runs scored. Izaiah Washington also drove in three runs and scored three more while Billy Sullivan and Jack Drewry all scored three runs in the Owls' win. Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-4 with two RBI.



Southern overcame an Adelphi bench intent on chirping Szturma to start the game with a two-run second inning. Mike Talavera led off with a single, but was retired on Walker's ground ball to second. Pelletier then singled before Gruttadauria's ground ball to the mound moved both runners into scoring position. Jagello then delivered the two-out single to left to give Southern the early 2-0 lead.

Adelphi got a run back in the top of the third before Southern answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Chad Fedeli was hit by a pitch and Billy Sullivan walked before Drewry doubled home Fedeli. After Talavera was retired, Walker drove in Sullivan and Drewry with a single to make it 5-1. Pelletier worked a walk before Gruttadauria singled to score Walker and Patrick Dillon doubled to scored Pelletier and Gruttadauria to give Southern an 8-1 lead through three innings.

In the fourth, Sullivan walked to lead off the inning and then beat a double-play ball to second base to give runners on first and second. Talavera then bunted Sullivan and Drewry over before Walker was retired. With two away, Pelletier jumped on a pitch and crushed it over the right-field wall to give the Owls an 11-1 lead.

The Panthers got a run back in the fifth and scored twice in the sixth to make it 11-4. Daigle came entered the game in the sixth after Szturma gave up a pair of singles and worked out of the inning allowed one inherited runner to score.

In the eighth, Sullivan, Drewry and Talavera walked to load the bases, before Walker drew another walk to force Sullivan in. Pelletier then hit a sacrifice fly ball to right to score Drewry and Gruttadauria delivered a double to score Talavera and move Walker to third. Jagello's sacrifice fly scored Walker and wrapped up the scoring for the afternoon.

Southern is back in action for the second game of its three-game set against New Haven on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU. After the Owls head to St. Michael's and Franklin Pierce this weekend, they will host New Haven on Wednesday, Apr. 17.
