SCSU Field Hockey Loses NE10 Opener In Shootout Against AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University field hockey dropped a head breaker to American International in its Northeast-10 Conference opener at Jess Dow Field. The Owls and Yellow Jackets played to a draw through two overtimes, which setup a best-of-five shootout between both teams, which AIC won, 3-0. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 2-4 overall and open the NE10 slate at 0-1 while AIC improved to 3-2 overall and open conference play at 1-0.

Freshmen Keana Criscuolo and Lindsay Onofrio both scored for the Owls, with Onofrio's registering as the first of her career. Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti also had an assist on Criscuolo's goal. In goal, Rachel Miller had five saves but allowed two goals. Freshman Lyndsay Troisi held the Yellow Jackets scoreless, with five saves, through the fourth quarter and both overtime periods.

AIC jumped out to an early lead with a goal towards the end of the first quarter and held onto a 1-0 lead through the first half. Just under four minutes into the second half, Criscuolo got on the board with her second goal of the season to tie it at 1-1. Rodriguez Ricchiuti setup the play when she penetrated the Yellow Jackets' defense and put a shot on goal before Criscuolo picked up the rebound to score the equalizer.

Moments later, AIC regained the lead when they scored off a corner to take a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth quarter. The Owls clamped down on the Yellow Jackets' offense while Troisi was brilliant in relief as she turned back three scoring attempts by AIC in the final frame.

In the 55th minute of play, Onofrio was awarded a penalty stroke, which she converted in when she flipped the ball past AIC's goalkeeper and tucked it in the left post to knot the game at 2-2. Both team's played scoreless through the two, 10-minute overtime periods. In the shootout, AIC converted on three of its four chances while Southern was unable to beat AIC's goal on their three attempts.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption at 7 p.m.
