SCSU Football Falls To Saint Anselm, 31-28

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut football lost to Saint Anselm, 31-28, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Manchester, N.H. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Keith Ridley was 22-for-32 for 217 yards with two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. E'Lijah Gray broke 100 yards on the ground for the second time this season after running for 124 yards on 23 carries. Luke Gadson led the Owls with six catches for 55 yards and a touchdown catch while Mike Strachan also scored on a four-yard touchdown catch. Seth Westover recovered a fumble on a run by Gray and took the rest of the way for a 25-yard TD.

Defensively, Joenel Figueroa led the Owls with seven tackles, including five solo tackles, while Chris White, Josh Martinotti and Youseff Gamel had six tackles each. Martinotti and White broke up passes while Derek Omoregie had a sack.

Southern took a 7-0 lead on a three-yard keeper by Ridley midway through the first quarter. Ridley's touchdown scamper was setup by a 13-yard catch by Gadson and a 36-yard catch by Tarik Hetmyer that set up the Owls up inside the five yard line. With 2:33 to play, Gray rambled for eight yards before being tackled from behind and having the ball punched it. Luckily, it landed in the hands of Westover who took it the rest of the way to give Southern a 14-0 lead.

The second quarter was all Saint Anselm as the home team rattled off 17 unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead into halftime. The third quarter was back-and-forth as both teams traded possessions before the Owls got the ball with 1:44 to play. John Amaning broke free for a 45-yard run that gave the Owls the ball on the Saint Anselm 41 yard line. Ridley then hooked up with Jaylon Tucker at the 20, but the Owls' first-year receiver carried a defender another 16 yards before being taken down at the Hawks' four-yard line. The first play of the fourth quarter saw Ridley fake a handoff to Gray and throw a strike to Strachan to give Southern a 21-17 lead.

Saint Anselm regained the lead on a halfback-pass by John Croce for 65 yards before Croce pounded the ball in from the one-yard line to give Saint Anselm a 31-21 lead with 3:16 to play.

Running the hurry-up offense, Ridley connected on four-straight passes to move the Owls to the Saint Anselm 28-yard line. On a pass to the end zone to Gadson, the Hawks' defensive back was flagged for pass interference, setting Southern up on the 14-yard line. Ridley found Gadson again for 10 yards and then hit the senior receiver for a five-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. On the ensuing kick-off, with 30 seconds on the clock, Saint Anselm recovered the onside kick and took a knee to end the game.

The Owls are back in action when they host Assumption for its annual Homecoming Game on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
