SCSU Men's Basketball Tops AIC, 85-75, As Four Players Score In Double Digits

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated American International, 85-75, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Owls improved to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Antonio Chandler led the Owls with 20 points and seven rebounds while Albert Vargas finished with 19 and five boards to go along with three assists and three steals. Isaac Hester scored 17 – including 15 in the second half – after hitting on 8-of-12 from the floor while adding four rebounds and a pair of assists. Cherif Diarra added 14 with five boards and four assists as well as two blocks and Sean James tallied seven points and seven rebounds.

Chandler returned to the Owls against Post earlier in the week after missing five games and posted his sixth-straight double-digit performance of the year. He now has three 20-point games to his season and has scored at least 15 in three straight. Hester had his best shooting performance of the season, 8-of-12, while he also scored 11-straight points for the Owls, which is also a team-best. James' seven rebounds were a season-high and the second-most in a game in his career.

It was a tale of two halves in Springfield, as AIC led 45-40 at halftime before the Owls took over. The Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 10-0 run before Southern countered with a 14-5 run of its own to cut AIC's lead to 15-14 with 12:48 to go before the break. AIC led for most of the half before Vargas tied on a three-pointer to cut the lead to two and then followed with a layup on the next possession. AIC used a 9-4 run to close the half and take a five-point lead into the break.

Coming out of the half, AIC held the lead through the first nine minutes of the second half and stood at 62-57 with 11:02 to go. From there, the Owls used a 14-0 run to open up a 71-62 lead with 7:56 to play. Hester was dominant in the three-span, scoring 11 of the Owls' 14 points on his way to a 15-point half. Once the lead was secured, the Owls never looked back. AIC chipped away with an 8-0 run late but never came within less than six points down the stretch, with Vargas scoring five points in the final 1:27 to seal the Owls' victory.

Southern returns to action when it hosts University of New Haven on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
