SCSU Men's Basketball Defeats New Haven, 86-72

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball defeated University of New Haven, 86-72, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls improved to 8-7 overall with their third-straight victory and jump 4-5 in the NE10. New Haven dropped to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Albert Vargas led the Owls with 17 points as well as six assists and four rebounds. Vargas also knocked down 3-of-5 from three-point range. Antonio Chandler had his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Isaac Hester had 13 points and seven rebounds with three assists and Christian Joe totaled 12 points. Six different Owls hit three-pointers with all six hitting two-or-more.



Southern opened the game with a 17-6 run and ultimately took a 29-10 run with 8:25 to play with Vargas totaling eight and Hester dropping in seven. New Haven eventually chipped away at the Owls' lead as the game headed to halftime with Southern leading, 41-22. At the break, seven different Owls scored, led by Hester's 10 while Vargas had eight and Chandler had seven. As a team, Southern knocked down seven three-pointers in the first half, with five different Owls finding the net from long range.

After New Haven cut Southern's lead to 13 points with 18:41 to play, Southern went on a 21-4 tear to take its largest lead of the half, 30 points at 64-34, with 13:10 to play. Sean James led the Owls in the charge with six points while Cherif Diarra and Albert Vargas both had five points.

Over the next eight minutes, the two teams played even, 23-23, as the Owls led 84-57 with 5:37 to play. New Haven managed a 15-4 run over the final five minutes of play to cut Southern's lead to 86-72 to the end of regulation.

Southern is back in action this weekend when it travels to Franklin Pierce in Ridge, N.H. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m. The Owls return to New Haven on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to host Adelphi at 7:30 p.m.
