SCSU Women's Basketball Drops Close Game Against Franklin Pierce, 57-56

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut Women's Basketball lost a close matchup against Franklin Pierce, 57-56. The Owls drop to 14-3 on  the season, 7-3 in Northeast-10 Conference Play

The Owls spread the scoring, with seven players scoring five points or more, including all five starters. Jillian Martin and Hope Fox led the way with 11 apiece, with Fox also grabbing four rebounds and Martin grabbing five. Rheyna Steinauer scored eight points and snatched eight boards, and Delaney Haines scored eight and threw four assists. Katie Williamson scored five of her own, and Lyzi Litwinko scored six off the bench. Renza Milner scored five points and grabbed six rebounds, and Ally Sentance chipped in with two points, two rebounds, and two assists. 

In the first quarter, after some back and forth action, the Ravens jumped out in front, forcing four Owl turnovers. They went on a 9-0 run to lead 17-8 with 2:42 left in the quarter. In the final few minutes, the Owls cut the deficit to seven, and the score at the end of the quarter was 19-12 in favor of Franklin Pierce. 

Southern made up for the deficit with a strong start to the second quarter. After falling behind by nine, the Owls went on a 6-0 run to make it a one-possession lead for the Ravens with 4:16 left. Both offenses stalled for the final minutes of the half, and the two teams would head into the break with the Ravens up three, 29-26. Jillian Martin led the Owls with eight points in the half on 4-5 from the field, followed by Katie Williamson with five and Hope Fox with 4. The Ravens held the Owls to only two free throw attempts in the first two quarters. 

The Owls would jump out to their first lead since the 6:52 mark in the first quarter to start the third, with a jumper from Delaney Haines and a layup from Rheyna Steinauer putting Southern ahead by one. The two teams would battle back and fourth for the next several minutes, with neither squad able to gain a lead larger than three. The two teams continue to trade blows, with the Owls ultimately gaining a four points lead that they would bring with them into the third quarter. SCSU outscored the Ravens 18-11 in the third, and Fox scored five more. 

Southern kept the momentum going, going up by as much as seven to extend their third-quarter scoring. However, the Ravens refused to go away, clawing their way back to tie the game at 52-52 with just over four minutes remaining. Both defenses locked down, with the Owls able to lead by four with two minutes left but Franklin Pierce quickly cutting it back down to two. A fast-break layup tied the game at 56. On the Owls final possession, they lost the ball, and Franklin Pierce was able to draw a foul with 1.6 seconds remaining. They made the one free throw they needed, and defeated the Owls, 57-56. 

The Owls return to New Haven for their next game, taking on Adelphi on Wednesday, January 22nd at 5:30pm.
