SCSU Men's Basketball Knocks Off No. 19 Adelphi, 82-69

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball defeated nationally-ranked No. 19 Adelphi, 82-67, for its fifth-straight win. The Owls improved to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the NE10 while Adelphi drops to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play. The Owls' win against the Panthers also snapped Adelphi's 12-game winning streak.

Albert Vargas scored a game-high 25 points with seven assists while Cherif Diarra and Antonio Chandler both had double-doubles. Diarra had 15 points and 13 rebounds and flirted with a triple-double with eight assists while also blocking four shots. Chandler had his third-straight double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Christian McClease also had 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Christian Joe also had eight points and a team-best three steals in the win.



Southern and Adelphi went to battle early as they played to a 23-23 tie over the first 10 minutes of the game. Albert Vargas dropped in 11 for the Owls while Christian McClease hit a pair of three-pointers. Adelphi then ran off a 10-point run to take a 33-23 lead with six minutes to play in the half. The Owls went on the attack and outscored the Panthers, 17-6, over the next five minutes to take a 40-39 lead. A pair of late free throws gave Adelphi a 41-40 lead head into halftime.

At the break, Vargas and Adelphi's Dayshaun Walton both had 18 points with Vargas converting on 8-of-10 from the floor including 2-of-2 from long range. Cherif Diarra also filled the box score through the first 20 minutes with six points, six rebounds and five assists.

The second half started the same way that the first half started as both teams traded hoops over the first four minutes of the game. Southern then used a 20-4 run over a seven-minute span to take a 68-52 lead with nine minutes to play. From there, the Owls weathered the Panthers outscoring them over the final nine minutes to seal the 82-69 victory. Chandler did most of his damage in the second half with a team-high 13 points while Diarra had nine and Vargas chipped in seven.

Inside the box score, Southern had just four turnovers to Adelphi's 11 in the game while also scoring 12 points off of those miscues by the Panthers. The Owls' bench also contributed 26 points while the Owls also had 17 second-chance points.

Southern is on the road for its next two games as they head to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley on Saturday, Jan. 25 followed by a trip to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Owls return home to host Saint Michael's on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
