SCSU Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker Against Bentley, 70-68

WALTHAM, Mass. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball lost a tight game against Bentley, 70-68, with the Falcon's Aaron Latham hitting a buzzer-beating midrange jumper to break the tie. The Owls drop to 10-8 on the season, 6-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Albert Vargas led the team in scoring with 21 points, also adding five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Isaac Hester and Antonio Chandler chipped in with 14 points apiece, with Hester also nabbing two steals and Chandler grabbing 10 boards for his fourth straight double-double. Cherif Diarra also recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and collecting 15 rebounds to go along with three assists, two blocks and a steal. It was the fifth straight game with four or more Owls in double figures.

After the tip, it was the Falcons who jumped out to an early lead, going ahead 7-2 almost two minutes into the first half. The Owls came storming back, going on a 10-0 run behind threes from Isaac Hester and Albert Vargas and more points from Christian McClease and Cherif Diarra to tie and then take the lead 15-9. However, Bentley would mount their own run, eventually tying the game at 17 at the halfway point of the first half. The back-and-forth action would continue, with neither team leading by more than five until the 1:38 mark, where The Owls jumped ahead by seven. Two Diarra free throws would give the Owls a nine-point lead heading into the break, with Vargas scoring 16 points in the first half.

Southern held their lead coming out of halftime, extending to as large as 13. At around the nine-minute mark, the Owls led 60-45, but the Falcons caught fire, going on a 23-5 run to retake the lead within the final minute. The Owls, facing a 68-65 deficit, found some life in the final few seconds, with Hester knocking down a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game up. However, the Falcons denied Southern's attempt to send the game to overtime, with Aaron Latham knocking down a turnaround jumper with zeros on the clock to secure the win.

The Owls return to action next Tuesday, January 28th, as they travel to Pleasantville, New York to take on Pace.
