SCSU Women's Basketball Tops Adelphi, 65-37

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball rolled to a 65-37 win against Adelphi in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 15-3 overall and 8-3 in the NE10 while Adelphi dropped to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

The Owls also won their sixth-straight home game and improved to 10-1 at James Moore Field House – the second-best mark since the Owls' 2006-07 season that saw Southern raise a National Championship trophy. The Owls' home court advantage has yielded a 23.9 points per game scoring margin as Southern is averaging 76.7 points and holding its opponents to 52.8 on its home court.

 


Despite missing All-NE10 forward Katie Williamson, the Owls went to Renza Milner in her first start of the season. Milner finished with nine points and a team-, season-high three blocks in a season-high 29 minutes. Delaney Haines led the Owls with her fifth 20-point effort of the season after finishing with 21 points as well as a game-high six assists and two steals. Rheyna Steinauer finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and four steals while also scoring seven points and Ally Sentance hit 3-of-5 from the outside on her way to a 10-point night.

Neither team seemed to be able to warm up to start the game as it sat at an 8-8 tie after they opened a combined 8-for-34 from the floor halfway through the first quarter. Southern trailed 6-2 in the opening minutes but outscored the Panthers, 9-2, down the stretch to head into the first intermission with an 11-8 lead. Ally Sentance knocked down a pair of three pointers in the first frame to lead the Owls with seven points through the game's first 10 minutes.

Southern opened the second quarter with an 11-3 run to take its biggest lead of the half, 25-11, with 2:44 to go. The Owls found their shooting stroke as they hit on 5-of-8 from the floor in the quarter. In addition, after opening the game 0-for-5 from three-point range, the Owls hit on six of their next seven from the outside, including 3-of-3 in the second quarter. Delaney Haines knocked down two of the Owls' three three-pointers on her way to eight points in the run. Southern held off an Adelphi surge and head into the break with a 30-18 lead, led by a game high 11 points from Haines.

Southern dominated play coming out of the break as they opened with a 13-2 run over the third quarter's first seven minutes. Five different Owls scored in the run as they hit on 6-of-8 from the floor. Adelphi scored the final seven points of the quarter to cut into the Owls' lead as the home team outscored the Panthers, 13-9, for the quarter to take a 43-27 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Owls doubled-up the Panthers in the fourth quarter, 22-10, on their way to the 28-point win. Haines dropped in eight in the final frame, while Lyzi Litwinko chipped in six. In total, six different Owls scored in the final 10 minutes as Southern hit on 7-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Southern is on the road for its next two games as they head to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley on Saturday, Jan. 25 followed by a trip to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Owls return home to host Saint Michael's on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
