SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Assumption, 98-89

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball lost a Northeast-10 Conference matchup to Assumption, 98-89, at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
 
Albert Vargas had a double-double with 36 points and 10 assists. Vargas' 36 points were a career-best, passing the 32 he scored against Bentley on Dec. 7. It was also Vargas' third double-double of the season. Cherif Diarra totaled 15 points and nine rebounds with a game-high three blocks while Christian McClease hit on 3-of-4 from three-point range on his way to a 10-point night. Elijah Wood also chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.


 
Southern opened the game with a 13-4 run, led by seven points from Vargas and four from
Diarra. The Owls pushed their lead to double digits, 19-7, with 15:50 to play. Leading 25-20, the Owls couldn't hold off a 19-7 run by the Greyhounds that saw the visiting team take its first lead, 37-36, with 5:26 to play in the half. The Owls outscored the Greyhounds down the stretch, 15-14, capped by a three-pointer from Isaac Hester with three seconds on the clock that gave Southern a 51-49 lead at halftime.
 
Vargas piled on 24 points for the Owls in the first half after he hit on 8-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and all five free throws, while also dishing out five assists. As a team, the Owls knocked down 7-of-8 from free throw range and were 14-for-20 from the free throw line.  
 
Both teams traded baskets to start the second half of the back-and-forth battle before Southern used an 11-2 run to take a 70-63 lead with 12:38 to play. Assumption countered with a 15-6 run to take a 78-76 lead with 8:55 to play. The short-bench proved costly for the Owls as Assumption outscored Southern, 23-13, over the final nine minutes to seal the win. Vargas had eight points down the stretch for the Owls in his career night.
 
Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when it hosts Post at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House. After traveling to American International on Saturday, Jan. 11, the Owls hosts University of New Haven on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at home.
