SCSU Men's Basketball Tops Post, 77-71

 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball defeated Post, 77-71, in the Owls final non-conference matchup of the season at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 6-7 overall while Post dropped to 8-7 on the season.

Antonio Chandler returned to the Owls lineup after sitting out the last five games and picked up where he left off. The senior transfer posted his fifth double-double – in eight games – with 16 points and 14 rebounds, as well as a team-leading three blocks and dished out four assists.

Cherif Diarra filled the box score with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Owls received 33 points off the bench as Elijah Wood knocked down 5-of-8 from three-point range to finish with a team-high 17 points while Christian McClease had 16 points.



The Owls and Eagles went back-and-forth over the games first eight minutes before Southern used a 20-6 run to take a 35-19 lead with 6:41 to go in the first half. The Owls shot 7-for-10 during the run, including 4-for-5 from three-point range. Wood knocked down three three-pointers in the run to pace the Owls with a team-best nine points during the stretch while Sean James also added a long ball. Christian McClease led the Owls with 12 points in the first half while Southern knocked down 8-of-15 from three-point range in the first half. Southern headed to the break with a 45-33 lead.

The Owls' 12-point lead was short lived as Post used an 11-4 run over the second half's first four minutes to cut the Owls' lead to 49-44.  Wood knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to push Southern's lead to 11 points, 55-44, just two minutes later. The Owls held a double-digit lead until the 5:12 mark. Post then used an 11-2 run to pull within a basket at 69-67 with 2:38 to play.

Chandler responded with back-to-back buts to push Southern's lead to six points, 73-67, with 1:02 to play. In addition to Chandler's hoops, the Owls converted on 4-of-7 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 11 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup set for 3:30 p.m. Southern returns home on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to host New Haven at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
