SCSU Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Post, 83-76

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost its 2025-26 season opener against Post, 83-76, in a non-conference matchup played at University of Bridgeport's Hubbell Gymnasium.

First-year Owl Justice Ellison, who joined Southern prior to the start of the season after transferring from American International College, led the way with 14 points as well as four rebounds. Kazell Stewart, who missed the entire 2024-25 season to injury, came off the bench to score 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor. Malik Banks, who transferred from Hillsborough Community College, had 13 points and four assists in his Owls debut. Cherif Diarra flirted with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds, to go along with four assists and two steals.



Southern and Post went back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the game before the Owls pulled away with a seven-point lead, 22-15, with just under eight minutes to go on a three-pointer by Elijah Wood. Wood finished with seven points and six rebounds off the bench. Southern held the lead until just under three minutes to go in the half when Post tied it up, 32-32. The Eagles outscored Southern, 13-4, over the final four minutes of the half to take a 40-35 lead into the break.

Coming out of the half, Southern outscored Post, 13-9, over the first 5:29 to pull within a point, 49-48, with 14:31 to play. After Southern tied the game at 56-56 with 11:45 to play, the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take a 63-56 lead with just under 10 minutes in regulation. Post led by as many as 13 points in the second half, 81-68 with 4:01 to go, before the Owls made a late 8-2 run to cut the Eagles' lead.

Southern is back in action at Bridgeport on Sunday, Nov. 17 when it faces the Purple Knights at 5 p.m. at Hubbell Gymnasium.
