SCSU Men's Basketball Falls to Bridgeport, 75-64

BRIDGEPORT, CONN.-- Southern Connecticut dropped their second game of the season against The University of Bridgeport 75-64. The Owls finish the Bridgeport Crossover tournament with a record of 0-2, while Bridgeport finishes 1-1. 

In his second game as an Owl, Justice Ellison led the way for the Owls with 21 points while shooting 9-18 from the field and 1-3 from beyond the arc. Ellison added a team-best seven rebounds and two assists. Malik Banks was the Owls' second leading scorer with 11 points while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists. 

The Owls jumped out to an early lead at the beginning of the first half going up 14-8 with 12:45 remaining on a layup by Ellison. Just over a minute later, with 11:18 to go, Bridgeport went on an 11-2 run  that gave them a  20-16 lead. After a basket by Kazell Stewart, Bridgeport would continue to build the lead up to 26-18 with 5:15 to go before the half. Stewart would finish the game with seven points on 3-4 shooting with three rebounds coming off the bench. 

After the Bridgeport run, the Owls started a run of their own when Malik Banks went to the free throw line with 4:47 to go. Banks would make both free throws, cutting the Bridgeport lead to six. Banks finished the night going 7-9 from the free throw line. After the foul, an Ellison layup and a big three-point play from Stewart brought the Owls back to within one, 26-25, with 3:55 to go. In the final minutes before the half, Bridgeport regained control, outscoring the Owls 9-2, and led by nine at the half 35-27. 

Coming out of halftime, Banks scored the Owls' first two baskets of the half on layups as the Owls cut the lead down to seven, 38-31, with just over 18 minutes remaining. Both teams continued to go back-and-forth with the Owls trailing 47-38 with just over 12 minutes to go. The Owls would start to cut that lead when Simon Percy went to the line and made 1-2. After the free throws, Ellison made a layup and converted on a three-point play that brought the Owls within three at 47-44 with just over 10 minutes to go. 

From there, Bridgeport would go on a 12-2 run lasting just under four minutes, going up 62-46 with six minutes to go. From there, Bridgeport held on for the win.  

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 PM for the Owls' home opener at the James Moore Field House.
