NE10 Quarterfinals: No. 4 SCSU Volleyball Defeats No. 5 Saint Michael's, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - No. 4 Southern Connecticut women's volleyball defeated No. 5 Saint Michael's, 3-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinal matchup at Pelz Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls advance to the NE10 Semifinals to face top-seeded Bentley. The win also gives the Owls an overall record of 16-7 on the year. 



Sydney Bennett and Kimi Mitchell led the Owls with 12 kills against Saint Michael's. Mitchell totaled her sixth double-double of the season with a career-best of 12 kills and 33 assists. Kerrigan Habing added 10 kills, as Sarah Henault had a team-best of five service aces while Dylan Marney and Kimi Mitchell had three. Sydney Bennett and Sarah Stark recorded a team-best of three blocks as Victoria Pascual had two. Sarah Henault totaled a team-best of 12 digs, Ceci Carter had a career-best of 11 digs and Kimi Mitchell had seven digs against the Purple Knights. 

Southern took the first set, 25-17, with Sydney Bennett leading the way with four kills while Kerrigan Habing had four. Kimi Mitchell also dished out eight assists in the set. Southern and Saint Michael's matched each other's runs over the first frame, with Southern holding onto an 18-15 lead. The Owls closed out the first set with a 7-3 run to take a 1-0 lead. 

The second set saw Habing and Mitchell pace the Owls, with each totaling three kills, as Southern won 25-19, after scoring the first six points of the set. Sarah Henault had four service aces in the second set alone, within the first six points of the set, which included three straight-aces. The Owls held a lead of 12-4 before St. Michael's pull within four, 15-11. Southern held on the rest of the way for the win. 

Saint Michael's took an early lead in the third set and control the game to a 10-5 lead. Southern used a 9-4 run to tie it at 14-14, and after three-straight kills by setter Mitchell, the Owls had a 17-16 lead. Saint Michael's refused to go away, eventually taking a 21-20 lead and forcing a timeout. The Purple Knights went on a 4-1 one to close out the third and force the fourth game. 

The fourth set saw both teams continue their back-and-forth battle, this time working to an 8-8 tie. Southern used a 13-4 run, with Bennett posting six kills, to take a 21-12 lead. The Purple Knights chipped away down the stretch, but the Owls held on for the win. 

Southern will face tournament No. 1 seed Bentley on Friday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. The winner of that matchup will face the winner of the other semifinal game on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. for the NE10 Championship.
