SCSU Women's Basketball Tops AIC, 78-60

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball cruised to a 78-60 win against American International in a Northeast-10 Conference win at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 17-6 overall and 10-6 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 11-13 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

Delaney Haines led all scorers with 21 points while Katie Williamson had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, as well as a pair of blocks. Williamson's second block of the game was the 118th of her career, passing Danielle Powell's 117 blocks for the second-most in Southern Connecticut history. Hope Fox and Rheyna Steinauer both scored 15 in the win while Fox also totaled six rebounds and five assists while Steinauner grabbed three boards and knocked down 2-of-3 from long range. Jillian Martin scored 12 points and totaled five rebounds and two blocks in the win.

 


Southern and AIC played to an early 8-8 tie before the Owls rattled off a 11-0 run to take a 19-8 lead after the first quarter. Rheyna Steinauer led the Owls with five points in the 11-point and totaled seven in the first frame. Haines knocked down a three-point to start the second quarter and make it a 14-0 run as Southern led, 22-8.

AIC then countered with a 9-2 run to cut Southern's lead to 24-17 with 1:11 to go in the half. The Yellow Jackets ended up outscoring Southern, 12-7, in the second quarter as the Owls led, 26-20, heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Southern opened with a 12-5 run, with Hope Fox accounting for half of those points, as Southern took a 38-25 lead with 5:40 to go in the third. Southern pushed its lead to 45-30 with its 15-point advantage with 2:43 in the third serving as its largest lead. Fox totaled eight points in the quarter to lead the Owls to a 24-18 advantage before heading to the fourth with a 50-38 lead.
As AIC continued to chip away at the Owls' lead, pulling to within 56-47, Southern used a 10-2 run to take a 65-49 lead with 5:23 to play. Haines (seven points) and Martin (four points) paced the Owls to a 16-11 edge over the remaining moments as the Owls wrapped up a 78-60 win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption at 1:30 p.m.
