SCSU Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Assumption, 55-52

WORCESTER, Mass. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball lost to Assumption 55-52 in a defensive battle. The Owls fall to 13-10 on the season, 9-8 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Antonio Chandler led the Owls with another stellar performance, recording 16 points, 14 rebounds, and two steals. He went 8-11 from the free throw line. Albert Vargas scored 12 and threw three assists, and Cherif Diarra filled the stat sheet with 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Sean James scored eight off the bench, also grabbing five rebounds. Christian McClease scored three and grabbed seven boards, and Chris Joe chipped in with three of his own.

The first half was an intense, defensive battle that saw the Owls go 10 minutes without a made field goal. Southern jumped out to a quick lead after Cherif Diarra scored the team's first four points. Both offenses struggled to get going, with the Owls up 8-6 halfway through the half. Antonio Chandler and Sean James gave SCSU their largest lead of the half, jumping ahead 14-9, but the Greyhounds hung around and took a lead with just over four minutes left. A quick 5-0 individual run from Albert Vargas gave the Owls the lead again, but they would only hit two free throws over the final three minutes. Assumption would grab the lead going into the break, going on a 4-0 run to go up 25-22. The Owls only shot 21.4% from the field, with the Greyhounds just better at 31.3%, including 0-10 from three.

Assumption came out of the locker room hot, going on a 9-3 run to open the second half. The Owls defense clamped down, allowing the offense to get their footing and cut the lead to six. However, Assumption began to find their rhythm from deep, hitting a few threes and converting off Southern turnovers to go up double digits. However, the Owls came right back. A three from James, a Diarra and-one, and a crafty finish from Chris Joe to made it a one point game. The two teams went back and fourth, with Assumption holding a lead but the Owls staying within one or two possessions. Southern cut it down to two with 4:06 left, with the Greyhounds up 49-47. The Owls continued to fight back, but Assumption maintained their small lead with key stops and free throws to win the game 55-52.

The Owls play their Elm City rivals next Wednesday, February 19th at the University of New Haven for their final away game of the regular season.
