After some back and forth scoring after the tip, the Owls took a small lead behind buckets from Antonio Chandler, Cherif Diarra, and Isaac Hester. The same three Owls kept the scoring going, putting Southern ahead 13-8. Albert Vargas and Sean James joined in on the fun, giving the Owls a double-digit lead with just under 10 minutes to go. Southern's defense was dominant, especially on the perimeter, holding the Chargers to 27.3% from three. The Owls continued to pour it on, with Chris Joe catching fire off the bench and knocking down back-to-back threes. The Chargers would only score 16 points in the final 10 minutes of the half, and the Owls would head into the break leading 45-29.
