SCSU Men's Basketball Rolls To 107-65 Win Against Franklin Pierce

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Franklin Pierce, 107-65, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 15-10 overall and 11-8 in NE10 play while Franklin Pierce dropped to 3-24 overall and 2-17 in conference play.

Albert Vargas led seven Owls in double figures with 21 points after shooting 7-for-11 from the floor including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Vargas also had six rebounds and five assists. Antonio Chandler had 18 points and six rebounds while Christian Joe had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win. Christian McClease had 13 points and a team-leading seven assists while Cherif Diarra had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Southern opened the game with a 22-4 run with Sean James scoring half of the Owls points in the first six minutes of the game. The Owls converted on 8-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from long range. Southern dominated play for the entire first half, eventually heading into the break with 64-23 lead. Vargas couldn't miss as he poured in 19 points in the last 12 minutes of the half to lead the Owls. As a team, the Owls converted on 61.5% from the floor after hitting on 24-of-39 including 11-of-23 from three-point range.

Franklin Pierce evened out in the second half as the Owls held a 43-42 edge in the game's final 20 minutes. For the game, Southern shot a blistering 57.8% (37-64) from the floor and knocked down 16 three-points while also converting 17-of-23 from the free throw line. The Owls bench scored 45 points in the game as well as 25 off of Franklin Pierce turnovers. The Owls also dominated inside the arc with 40 points coming in the paint. For the night, Southern converted on 21-of-28 from inside the three-point line.

Makai Coleman chipped in 10 points with four rebounds while James finished with 11 for the game after hitting on 3-of-7 from long range. Evan Gutowski had six points and six rebounds with two assists.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Saint Anselm for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House. The Owls open NE10 Championship tournament play next weekend with the first round commencing on Friday, Feb. 28.
