SCSU Women's Basketball Tops Franklin Pierce, 75-72

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament just around the corner – set to begin on Friday, Feb. 28 – the Owls picked up a crucial win against Franklin Pierce, 75-72, at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 18-8 overall and 11-8 in NE10 play while Franklin Pierce dropped to 9-16 overall and 6-13 in conference.

Delaney Haines led the Owls with 25 points on the strength of five three-pointers while Hope Fox had 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and five assists. Jillian Martin had eight points – including a pair of huge three-pointers in the second half – as well as a game-high eight assists and three steals. Katie Williamson finished with 12 and Lyzi Litwinko had five points and eight rebounds.



Southern opened the game with a 9-0 run, with Haines scoring five and Williamson contributing four. Franklin Pierce countered, outscoring the Owls 10-6 over the last four minutes of the quarter to pull within five, 15-10. The second quarter saw Haines get hot as she hit on 2-of-3 from three-point range, with Hope Fox adding another, as Southern outscored the Ravens, 23-16, to head into the break with a 38-26 lead. Haines scored 17 in the first half while Williamson had 10.

Starting the half, Southern pushed it's lead to its largest of the game, 40-28, before Franklin Pierce doubled-up the Owls, 21-10, over the next seven minutes to pull within three points, 50-47, with 2:07 to play. Jill Martin answered the run with a big three-pointer to push Southern's lead to six points, 53-47, and then converted again a moment later to give Southern a 56-49 lead with 18 seconds to play in the third. The Ravens made a dent in the Owls lead after outscoring Southern, 25-18, to head into the fourth with the Owls leading, 56-51.

In the fourth, Southern led by nine points with 8:06 to play but Franklin Pierce used a 7-1 run to pull within a basket, 62-60, with 4:26 to play. After a Marisa Lee free throw, Haines knocked down another three to push Southern's lead to six, 66-60. Franklin Pierce held the edge for the next three minutes as they outscored the Owls' 10-3 to take a 70-69 lead with 44 seconds to play. Rheyna Steinauer made a layup to give the Owls the lead before Hope Fox canned a pair of free throws to give Southern a 73-70 lead with 16 seconds to play. Haines then converted on a pair from the charity stripe and the Owls held on for the 75-72 win.

Southern is back in action for its regular-season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they host Saint Anselm at 5:30 p.m. Southern will host Senior Night festivities before the game.
